BMW 430i Facelift

The objective of this project was to create a facelift for the polarizing BMW 2021 430i coupe. Each student should analyze and draw upon classic BMW design queues and apply them to the front end of the 430i. Finally students must present a final Motorsport variant of their design in an emotive Photoshop rendering.

This 430i Facelift project was created for the class Design - 332 at CSU Long Beach.

Taking into consideration the front end design language from past BMW cars, I designed four variants of the 430i which aim to combine traditional BMW design with their modern forward-thinking direction.

Continuing with concepts A, B, and C, I created front and three-quarter view sketch renders using Procreate to gain a better understanding of the design in context.

I chose to pursue concept A for my final presentation. From the previous iteration, I removed the chrome accents around the grill, as well as redesigned the lower daytime running lights to better reflect the design of the upper headlights.

To begin creating the Motorsport variant of the 430i, I enlarged the wheel base and fenders and lowered the roof line. This helps to give the car an overall more aggressive stance and look. I also removed excess interior seating as well as the sun roof.

Using the subtly changed Motorsport variant as an underlay, I created three potential DTM race cars.

The final concept combines features from the previous B and C variants.
